Project Description
MojoDrill helps college students build a consistent and positive morning routine, amidst their busy, unpredictable schedules. This project explores daily habits, motivation, and emotions to shape a practical, engaging solution—featuring character illustrations and evidence-based strategies for long-term habit formation.
DURATION
A 15-week process identifying a market opportunity, conducting research and data analysis, followed by ideation, prototyping, user testing, and final mockup development.
BACKGROUND
A consistent morning routine can boost health, focus, and overall productivity. However, college students often face hectic, unpredictable schedules and may lack awareness of the routine’s benefits—making it feel unnecessary or difficult to maintain.
How might we motivate and educate college students to establish a positive morning routine?
How might we support college students in adopting a consistent morning routine in a practical and fun way?
Solution
The ultimate goal is to foster long-term behavior change in users, supported by the following key product principles:
MOTIVATING
Encourages consistent engagement and a sense of progress.
PRACTICAL
Easily fits into daily routines and real-life contexts.
FUN
Makes the experience enjoyable and rewarding. Introduces a friendly, guiding character, Mojo, to create emotional connection and leading/interacting with user.
EDUCATIVE
Builds knowledge and awareness over time.
1.
Literature review
Reviewed publications to understand the current landscape and potential interventions.
Card sorting + interview
Provided participants with activity cards to organize according to their daily routines. This helped prompt habit recall, visualize key tasks, and uncover motivations and behaviors.
Market benchmarking
Analyzed current solutions to understand the current landscape, and identify gaps and opportunities.
Introduction: Morning routine is beneficial... but do college students have time for this?
A morning routine sets the tone for the day and offers numerous health and productivity benefits. However, college students often have busy and unpredictable schedules, making it seem impractical to establish a morning routine.
User research: What does the user's daily schedule look like? What about their motivations? goals? emotions? ...
By providing users with a deck of cards to sort and represent their schedules, I gained deep insights into their daily routines. Through this combination of interactive methods and user interviews, I visually mapped out the users' journey and fostered empathy with them.
Using the Jobs To Be Done framework, I uncovered users' motivations and the underlying reasons behind their actions. I also compared their current behaviors with ideal practices for a consistent morning routine, which were informed by a thorough literature review.
Insight: While users acknowledged the benefits of a morning routine, there were common misconceptions. They underestimated its impact on productivity and well-being, and perceive it as impractical, hence less prioritized, to fit in their unpredictable and busy college schedules.
Market benchmarking: What do the market and trend tell us?
By aligning market insights with user preferences, I identified insights for the product opportunities: (1) fun and engaging, (2) offers practical information/support, (3) promotes long-term positive outcomes, and (3) targets the 'health and fitness' category rather than 'productivity', (4) creates personalized experience.
In the realm of digital products, the trend research has highlighted the significance of incorporating virtual assistance and establishing a distinct personality. Virtual assistant's personality plays a pivotal role in ensuring long-term usage and fostering consumer loyalty.
2.
Design Criteria
Defined design criteria as success metrics based on the collected insights.
3.
Sketching and Prototyping
Defined design criteria as success metrics and generated 100+ concepts. Selected and prototyped top ideas for testing.
Product Testing - Concept & Usability
Conducted concept and usability testing with users and peers to gather feedback and refine the solution.
Ideation: 100+ ideas later...
Using the design criteria as my guiding principles, I engaged in an ideation process to generate product solutions, exploring both physical and digital realms without imposing limitations. This approach aimed to foster creative ideas during the early stages and prevent the dismissal of innovative concepts.
Subsequently, I categorized insights, sought peer feedback, and developed lo-fi prototypes to test the concepts. Through careful alignment with the design criteria and goals, I ultimately decided to pursue a digital product as the optimal feasible solution, and began crafting the preliminary concept for the information architecture of the product.
Mid-fi prototyping: Actualizing concepts through wireframes
To create the mid-fi prototypes of the concept, I intentionally omitted colors and disregarded font variations. This deliberate approach ensured that insights obtained from this early testing focused on the product's concept and user experience, rather than being influenced by the visual aesthetics and UI element.
Product testing: usability and concept
Using the mid-fi prototypes, I conducted product testing to assess the product usability and gain feedback on the concept. To ensure data consistency and validity, I developed a product testing protocol that I followed while interacting with the users.
Several key insights surfaced pertaining to the app's user interface (UI) elements, the importance of including educational materials about morning routines, and the strong demand for flexibility in developing one's own routine.
4.
Design System and Illustrations
Established the product’s design language and brand identity. Designed a character mascot and built a cohesive design system.
Final Product
Applied the design system to create a high-fidelity interactive prototype.
